Kingston Freeport Terminal (KFTL) was established in 2015 in Kingston, Jamaica as the vehicle to be used in the execution of the terms of the 30-year Concession Agreement between the Government of Jamaica and CMA CGM. KFTL is responsible for the execution of the plans for the management and development of the Kingston Terminal inclusive of the dredging, infrastructural, equipment acquisition and IT upgrades. The KFTL team assumed control of the facilities on July 1, 2016 with a cadre of management and staff with extensive local and international experience in the management and development of container terminals.

KFTL was established in response to the demand by international shipping lines for a modern and competitive transshipment hub in the Central America and Caribbean region which will allow them to service the important markets of the North and South American East coast and facilitate the post Panamax vessels that would be transiting the expanded Panama Canal.

The proximity of Kingston to the markets of the Americas and its proximity to the Panama Canal made it a preferred location for KFTL. This was further enhanced by the level of experience, training and motivation of the labour on the terminal.

Under the 30 year Concession Agreement by which KFTL took control of the terminal, the company is responsible for the development and management and hand over of the facility. This involves the dredging of the access channel, turning and shipping basin, the improvement/development of the infrastructure, the improvement of the ICT facility and the improvement of the operating equipment.
